"Green Violinist," (1923-24) by Marc Chagall. For the purple lover! Or the violin lover! Or somebody who loves both?
This is an offset lithograph of less commonly seen image, painted by Marc Chagall, of a violinist in a purple coat playing a violin. A Cubist influence can been seen in the way the man's coat, pantlegs and shirt have been turned into geometrical shapes facing the viewer at different angles.
Chagall's well-known practice of creating a sort of collage composition, with figures often floating in the air and being unexpected sizes is evident here in the details of a small figure flying across the top of the composition, a very small man holding an unknown object to the left of the violinist, and an animal the size of the house in the bottom left corner, not to mention the musician himself resting his feet on those houses.
A sticker on the back tells us that the painting is part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim collection, and I believe that this is a print that the museum probably sold in its gift shop at one time. When viewed with a magnifying loupe, the dot patterns suggest that it is an offset lithograph as opposed to a digitally printed image.
The framing is a highlight of this piece - a shimmery violet frame showing some wear and two luxuriously thick mats around the print.
Purchase this today as an addition to your purple collection, or as an accent piece in any room.
