You are bidding on approx. 7 Lbs of Shagbark Hickory Bark and (1) 16 Oz Bottle of Shagbark Hickory Syrup. This bark / syrup is shipped in a Large Flat Rate USPS Box. The box is 12" x 12" x 5.5" tall. The Bark was harvest from trees that were harvested from my forest and the Syrup was made using this same Hickory Bark that was removed from these hickory trees. The Syrup is a homemade product and I'm mainly including this syrup in this auction so you can explore the great taste of this syrup and encourage you and your family to make your own from some of this bark. This Syrup was made in my home kitchen. This bark was not removed from a live standing trees. I don't believe in peeling Shagbark from live standing trees. The tree naturally sheds the bark; thus the name shagbark hickory so I only collect "shedded" bark or bark from harvested trees.
Applications for this bark are numerous. Smoking, Grilling and for making Tea and Syrup. I personally suggest getting the most out of this bark and I suggest using the bark to 1st make your syrup then 2nd use the left over bark from the syrup production when smoking or grilling your favorite food.
To make Syrup you basically (1) clean the bark (I normally use tape water and a clean brush or rag). (2) Toast the bark in your oven. (3) Add clean filtered water in a pot and stew the bark to make a hickory bark tea. I suggest bringing the water to a boil with the bark in the water and then lowering the heat and stewing the bark for hours. The goal is to create your hickory tea. (4) Once you have created the tea you should remove the bark and strain the liquid. (5) Add 4 cups sugar per 1 cup tea and cook over heat until sugar is dissolved (lots of stirring). (6) (7) & (8) Strain the liquid & syrup often & repeat (the more you strain the better). I like using a new clean cotton cloth as it is less porous vs. cheesecloth and does a better job filtering out the small particles. (9) Then bottle and seal the syrup using a similar process that would be used for canning applications. Don't throw away the bark though; let it dry and then use it to start fires or use it on the smoker or grill. Hickory bark produces excellent smoke flavor. (10) Enjoy your homemade Hickory Syrup.
My family actually produces real Maple Syrup during the winter months but if you've ever made real Maple Syrup you know it is a labor of love per say! Lots of hard work for the payoff. We prize this Maple Syrup and we don't share it well. I had heard about making Hickory Syrup and since my woods has 100's of Shagbark Hickory trees I wanted to try something new. Needless to say I will continue to make real Maple Syrup as nothing compares; but this Shagbark Hickory Syrup is the closest comparison that I've found. I'm not saying it is better but it is close and it is a lot less work.
I use this Shagbark Hickory Syrup in place of Maple Syrup or store bought syrup. It is great on pancakes, waffles and ice cream. It also makes a great glaze when smoking pork or making candied salmon. I personally love to substitute this syrup in place of Simple syrup when making my favorite adult mixed drinks. Shagbark Hickory Syrup Old Fashioned is my favorite.
