  • Condition: This mug is in good condition. It was most likely never used for its intended purpose. It is monogrammed on the front with the letters RB. It has no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The exterior has a nice warm gray age patina. It is soiled and could use a good cleaning, which we leave to the discretion of the new owner. The bottom of the inside appears a bit scratched as if someone started to clean it possibly to see the mark. The surface inside and out has a few scratches and some dings. The top of the mug is a bit bent and is out of round and the base is also a bit banged up and slightly out of round. The back of the handle is also a bit banged-up as can be seen from the photos. Be that as it may, this is still a very nice antique that would make a great addition to your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information.

    Details
    Description:
Beautiful antique pewter George IV Pint Tankard by Charles Bentley of Woodstock Street, London England. This early to mid 1800s pewter tankard or mug has a tulip flower shape with a pedestal base. The mug has a round base and a rising curved side with an applied handle. The mug has a hallmark on the outside left of the handle near the top showing four punched squares one with the letters CB, one having the image of a person sitting on a throne or chair, a third with a lion passant, and the fourth having a flower with a central circle, with the word PINT under it. The bottom of the inside of the mug has the circular mark of Charles Bentley which says "C. BENTLY.WODSTOCK St." See item 972 in "Pewter of The Western World 1600-1850" by Peter Hornsby and published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd in Exton PA in 1983 for a similar mug identified as "English tulip quart by Charles Bentley early nineteenth Century". The marks on the outside and inside are similar to those shown as 407 on page 43 in Christopher Peal's book "British Pewter and Britannia Metal; for Pleasure and Investment" published by John Gifford in London in 1971. A great piece of old pewter that is over 200 years old that is in good condition. It is rather unusual in form and age and would display nicely in your collection.
